This urban courtyard for HUD supported elderly housing doubles as a fairground for an annual Greek festival and fundraising event. Our design allows free
pedestrian circulation in
the parking/fundraising
area by eliminating
curbs. Challenges
included working with
the diverse users and
complex infrastructure
found in center city,
planning for around
the clock use,
addressing safety
concerns for the elderly,
protection from
vandalism, and creating
the life support systems
necessary for urban
planting. Paving patterns
were designed in
colored concrete and
unit pavers to reflect
details in the building
facades. Streetscape
revisions involved
siting street trees
and paving renovations.
